Needham analyst John Todaro trimmed his price target on Applied Digital (APLD) on October 8th even though the AI infrastructure firm reported a blockbuster Q1 last evening.
The company more than quadrupled its revenue on a year-over-year basis to $342 million, on a per share loss of just one cent, miles above $116 million and 29 cents per share that analysts had called for.
Despite the remarkable print, Applied Digital shares are trading at less than half their price in late May.
What made Needham lower its price target on APLD stock
Todaro trimmed his price target from $83 to $70 primarily to reflect near-term financing overhangs and capital expenditure risks.
While Applied Digital’s top-line growth was extraordinary, the infrastructure builder posted a net loss of $221 million due to rising interest expenses and heavy build-out costs across its data center campuses.
Funding massive HPC and AI capacity requires substantial debt and capital raises, which has kept retail and institutional investors cautious.
Needham adjusted its price objective on APLD stock to account for these elevated borrowing costs and potential dilution – acknowledging that sentiment remains heavily constrained by the balance sheet overhead required to bring new gigawatt capacity online.
Applied Digital shares remain poised for explosive gains
Investors should note, however, that Needham’s downwardly revised $70 price target still signals potential upside of more than 200% in Applied Digital shares.
The investment firm maintained its “Buy” rating on the company – citing its expanding $36 billion lease pipeline and its crucial role in providing next-generation HPC infrastructure to hyperscalers.
APLD delivered the second 75-megawatt phase of Building 2 at its Polaris Forge 1 campus on Oct. 1st, proving that new data center capacity is coming online much faster than expected.
As long-term leases begin generating steady cash flows, Needham expects the market to eventually revalue the company like a stabilized digital infrastructure landlord.
What will determine Applied Digital’s long-term trajectory
APLD shares’ longer-term trajectory will now depend more on balance sheet execution.
Hyperscaler appetite for AI compute power is undeniable – but the Nasdaq-listed firm must show that contracted rental revenue will materialize fast enough to service its expanding debt load.
If management successfully converts its 1.41 gigawatt lease book into recurring operating cash flow without issuing dilutive equity, the stock’s steep valuation discount could disappear quickly.
Conversely, further debt rate pressure remains the primary swing factor keeping shares suppressed.
For long-term investors, the current sell-off presents a high-conviction risk-reward entry backed by fundamental multi-year demand drivers.
All in all, while not as bullish as Needham, other Wall Street firms are sticking with their bullish view on Applied Digital as well.
The consensus rating on APLD sits at Buy currently, with a mean price target of about $63, which suggests massive upside potential from here.
